Chapter 5

Ch5

Almost as soon as they had finished speaking with Tobias, Thicket made a break for it. She was fluttering around without the slightest bit of concern whether or not she had been spotted and based on the reaction they had gotten from Tobias – who hadn't even seemed to believe what he had seen until she set him on fire – letting any of these magicless people see her was a terrible idea.

Lola and Nawfar chased Thicket as she flew right across the street; they just barely made it out of the way of a large vehicle painted mint green with various colorful designs by the time they got to the other side of the road. “Oh! That must be the bowling alley they were talking about earlier…” Thicket exclaimed and flew right towards the building.

"Thicket! Stop it before someone sees you!" Lola yelped, chasing her in between the scattered vehicles. She noted during their chase that there were not as many vehicles in this lot as the one they had just come from by the roller rink.

Thicket had managed to find the entrance, and a couple exiting the building didn't see her as she flew overhead and zipped right inside. "Thicket…" Nawfar groaned, following close behind Lola who was already scurrying inside.

The bowling alley, Lola noticed, was not quite as colorful as the roller rink across the street. The clientele looked a bit older, and the building itself looked significantly older. Lola’s eyes scanned the crowd, searching feverishly for Thicket. She spotted her floating around the lobby, and Lola quickly snatched her up and held her tightly in one hand. “Get a hold of yourself,” Lola snapped.

Thicket hissed up at her, and a bit of steam came out of her nostrils. “Seriously, Thicket,” Nawfar said, leaning in closer so that she could look the fairy hybrid in the eye. “You are not thinking straight. I don’t know what was in those brownies you ate earlier, but you’re acting like we’re back in Warlor. We need to be careful.”

Thicket took a few deep, calming breaths. "You're right. You're absolutely right. I don't know what came over me. But, Lola, you’d better not ever manhandle me like this again, or I'll set your hair on fire!"

“Get in the bag then,” Lola said.

“What are you two ladies whispering about over here?” Chase asked, seeming to appear out of nowhere. He was staring at them curiously, and as Lola turned around to face him, she shoved Thicket back into her bag.

“Oh!” Lola exclaimed. “Well, you know, just checking out the bowling alley. You own it, right?”

“That’s right,” Chase said, puffing his chest out a bit. “Come on over, and I’ll get you ladies some shoes.”

Lola stared blankly. “I’m sorry, but we do not have any, er…” She was not sure what these magicless folks called their currency. They had been fortunate enough that they had been offered free skates at the roller rink since they were out-of-towners, but she had a feeling Chase couldn’t afford to hand out free bowling games.
